RAWALPINDI: The capacity of the shelter home set up in a parking plaza at Fawara Chowk has been expanded from 80 to 125 while it has thus far provided shelter to as many as 6,000 people since it began late last year.
This was disclosed by focal person of the shelter home and Cantonment Magistrate Hafiz Muhammad Imran on Tuesday.
He said that people could stay in the shelter from 5:30pm to 8am every day. They just have to present their National Identity Card (NIC) and provide the phone number of a close relative for gaining access.
Those seeking shelter are provided a warm bed, blankets and two meals, once at night and once in the morning.
He added that around 12 elderly citizens have taken to near permanent residence at the shelter home. Apart from beds, and meals, they are also provided with medical facilities, Imran said.
Imran added that most of the occupants of the shelter home were day labourers. Some of these labourers hail from far off areas such as Swat, Dir, and even Chitral.
He claimed that citizens at the shelter were well looked after apart from being provided with all the basic facilities that a person needs.
In case of an emergency, he said that medical facilities are provided at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ).
He added that the staff of the Rawalpindi West Management Company works in two shifts to maintain cleanliness in the area.
