KARACHI: The Sindh government began the construction of underpasses on the intersection of Tariq Road and Hill Park at Shaheed-e-Millat Road. The track leading to the Tipu Sultan Flyover from Jail Chowrangi will be closed for traffic and an alternative route for commuters has been arranged. A three lane road has been constructed on the service road decreasing the green belt's width. A traffic diversion plan is also being developed for the construction of an underpass on the other track. The 10 kilometre track leading to Korangi Hino Chowrangi from Jail Chowrangi will become signal free after the construction of the underpasses. The project is estimated to cost Rs900 million and will be completed in four months.

The Sindh government approved these projects and the construction of a flyover on Shaheed-e-Millat Road last year and reserved Rs1.5 billion for the projects in the budget of last fiscal year. The flyover on Tipu Sultan intersection was completed last year at a cost of Rs600m.

Project Director Niaz Soomro informed The Express Tribune that the flyover on Tipu Sultan Road intersection was constructed under the Karachi package and the construction of one underpass will begin on March 2 (today) and on the other underpass next week. According to Soomro, the aforementioned intersections are the busiest intersections in the city which experience the worst traffic jams during peak hours.

Two-way underpasses comprising two main lanes are intended to maintain the flow of traffic on the road. The intersections of Naheed Superstore and Khalid Bin Waleed Road will be blocked afterwards and U-turns will be provided on both underpasses.
