Second day of PAPSCON 2019 focuses on burn, cancer surgeries

KARACHI: At the moment reconstructive work in plastic surgery in Pakistan, especially with regards to trauma, skin deformities, tumours and other conditions such as bones sticking out, is making headway.

This was stated on Saturday by Dr M Younus Mehroze who was visiting Karachi from Lahore to attend the annual conference of Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPSCON) held at the Agha Khan University Hospital (AKUH).

He was speaking at the second day of the three-day conference organised by Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS) in association with the Express Media Group. The conference, PAPSCON 2019, was aimed to raise awareness about cosmetic surgeries for burns, birth defects, cancer patients, accident victims and aesthetics.

Participating in the conference were over 50 local and international plastic surgeons as well as trainers, professors and doctors. Modern surgery techniques were discussed at length.

The second day's sessions focused on reconstruction surgeries for breast cancer patients and patients with broken bones or damaged nerves, as well as cosmetic surgeries and surgeries on burn victims. Techniques being used currently with the latest technology for plastic surgeries performed on hands were also elaborated upon.

Dr Michelle Plazo, visiting from America, explained in detail how breast cancer patients have their breasts removed and then often opt for breast reconstructive surgery. There were also two sessions held on aesthetic surgery, which focused on modifying the nose and liposuction of the face.

Other speakers included Dr Sumaira Ajmal, Dr Aqsa Akhtar, Dr Naveed Azhar and Dr Mamoon Rashid from Islamabad, Dr Muneer Alam from Faisalabad, Dr Taimur Shoaib, Dr Ahmed Faraz Bhatti, Dr Naveed Azhar, Dr Ali visiting from Dubai, Dr Shahid Jamil from Australia, Dr Dia Othman from the United Kingdom, Dr Mariam Rauf from Peshawar, Dr Mustafa Devki from Turkey and others.

As on the first day, stalls were set-up by various international and local pharmaceutical companies showcasing the latest equipment and medicines being used in plastic surgery.  Some stalls focused specifically on the equipment and medicines used on burn victims and those used for cosmetic surgeries.
