Prado runs over protesting PPP members in Liberty

Express June 07, 2010

LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers smashed the windscreen of a Prado and accused the driver of running over two party members during a protest organised in Liberty Chowk, Gulberg.

The protestors blocked the intersection and chanted slogans against the Punjab government after the Parks and Horticulture Authority removed billboards owned by the Lahore (district two) president Afnan Butt.

District president Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar led the protest and rallied party workers to demonstrate their displeasure. Delayed motorists honked and attempted to force their way through the picket.

To stop a Prado from getting through, some party workers climbed onto the vehicle’s bonnet and allegedly smashed the windscreen.

The driver panicked, hit the gas pedal and ran over two party workers.

The driver then tried to escape from the scene but was captured by protestors and handed over to police officials. The injured were shifted to a local hospital and the driver was arrested.

Chaudhry Asghar Gujjar stated that the Punjab government was trying to economically cripple PPP workers. He stated that they would continue to protest. He stated that his party members were protesting peacefully and accused police officials of failing to control traffic. He admitted that the incident was regrettable.
