ISLAMABAD: Traders in the federal capital have called upon the government to arrange for the early passage of an amended rent law from the parliament apart from promulgating a balanced rent control act for the city.

This was stated by Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) President Ahmed Hassan Moughal while presiding over a meeting of ICCI Traders Welfare Committee held at the Chamber House on Wednesday along with office-bearers of various market associations.

Moughal said that trading community had been calling for the promulgation of a balanced rent control law in the federal capital for the past 30 years, but their demand seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

He added that incumbent Federal Finance Minister Asad Umer had assured local traders during his election campaign that if his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was voted into power, they will arrange for the passage of the new rent law for the federal capital.

He urged Umer to uphold his promise and settle this long-overdue issue of traders.

ICCI Senior Vice President Rafat Farid said that the government was reportedly planning to introduce a fixed tax scheme for traders in the federal capital. He added that the ICCI will give its suggestions to the government on the issue.

He further urged the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) to withdraw the notices it had issued to local traders for trade licence and signboard tax.

The committee evolved a consensus on holding a convention of traders on the balanced rent control act in Islamabad.

They decided to invite Umer to the convention.

The committee also passed a resolution calling upon Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz to withdraw notices issued to traders to acquire trade licences.
