LAHORE: Walking even a few metres distance becomes very tiring when one has to drag a motorcycle to find a mechanic to mend a puncture. In such a situation, a mobile puncture mending shop would prove to be a great help.

Muhammad Shafiq has been mending punctures on his mobile set-up for the past five years. Along with his tools, he leaves home early in the morning. Travelling on his motorcycle from Dharampura to Doctor’s Hospital, Shafiq spends his day searching for the customers with flattened tyres.

Shafiq leaves home at 7:00am and manages to fix around 15-20 punctures in a day. He said the number of puncture incidents surges during rains. “While rain proves to be troublesome for some people, it comes as a blessing for us,” Shafiq remarked.

Canal Road, a stretch of 39 kilometres from Khara Pul to Thokar Niaz Baig, has fewer tyre repairing or mechanic shops. There are around three puncture mending shops on petrol pumps alongside the stretch from Dharampura to Thokar Niaz Baig. Hence, a mobile puncture business does well in this specific stretch.

Other than Shafiq, many mobile mechanics could be found on Canal Road. They also carry petrol. Over 100 motorcycles and cars get punctured on daily basis and over 80% of motorcycles punctures are mended by these mobile mechanics.

Farhan Ahmed, a commuter, shared an incident when his motorcycle’s tyre got punctured near Mall Road while on his way to Johar Town with family. He had to cover nearly 500 metres distance to get a puncture repaired. His wife and children had also gone through the ordeal.

“Thankfully, we found a mobile mechanic who eased our trouble,” Farhan said.
