Preparing for the storm

Letter June 05, 2010

KARACHI: Few of us in Karachi can imagine the devastating effects of the storm — especially if it hits Karachi, as is being widely predicted. The biggest danger will be for those who live along the coast and also those who live in shanty towns in the city. There are also thousands of people who live along the city’s Lyari river who need to be moved.

I hope evacuation plans have been made and implemented. Fishermen have been told to keep their boats in safe places and particular attention has been placed on storm water drains. Also people are strongly advised to not stand under structures such as trees, poles and billboards.
