Ashiana Scheme: Punjab government issued notice

Petition moved by Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafree questions allotment process for houses.

LAHORE:

Lahore High Court Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry on Thursday issued notice for July 1 to the Punjab government and the Housing, Planning and Development Department secretary seeking their reply on a petition questioning the Ashiana Housing Scheme which aims at providing inexpensive residential facility to low income people.

The petition moved by Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafree questions the allotment process for the houses. The petitioner contends that the step of providing houses at to the poor is indeed a good step. Yet, he alleges, that the allotment was not transparent and fair and has accused the officials of nepotism.

He contends that allotment of the houses on the basis of personal liking would not serve the stated purpose of the scheme. He has prayed to the court to direct the respondents to infuse transparency and equity in the scheme so that deserving people could benefit from it.
