Hollywood star Zac Efron's role as American serial killer Ted Bundy in film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile has made more than just waves.

While many have been making comparisons between Bundy and Efron's avatars, others have been busy romanticising his character. And although the 17 Again actor has been under fire for taking on the role, he hadn't opened up about it, until now.

In a recent interview with Variety, Efron shared that he initially had ‘reservations’ but found it particularly ‘intriguing’. “I had reservations about playing a serial killer. I’ve seen people make horror films like this before, and it seems like an aggressive play to separate yourself from a perceived image. It’s got a lot of killing and hacking and slashing. I think I’ve seen that before too many times.”

Efron continued, “This movie was really about a human being, somebody that perhaps I would have been friends with. And a love story from a very unique perspective.... I’ve never seen that before. It’s intriguing to me. I think it’s more psychological..."

The Bad Neighbours star has carried out quite a bit of research for the role by way of director Joe Berlinger. “The most interesting and exciting thing for me to contribute to the movie was Ted had this thing about him, this facade, his charm, and the way he worked with people," Efron explained.

He went on to add that the key aspect of the film is how Bundy duped everyone around him. “A lot of people in prison loved him. Cops that knew him seemed to think he was an okay guy. It wasn’t until after he fully admitted to everything that most of the world really believed that Ted was even capable of these things. He pulled the wool over our eyes.”
