Army rescues two Spanish mountaineers from K-2 base

Pakistan Army on Tuesday rescued two Spanish mountaineers from K-2 base under extreme harsh weather condition, said a Radio Pakistan report.

The rescued mountaineers, Jon Barredo and Eva Robles, thanked the armed forces for saving their lives on time.

K-2, slightly shorter than Mount Everest, is 8,611 metres (28,251 feet) high, is Pakistan’s second-highest peak.



Located in the Karakorum Mountains along the border between China and Pakistan, K-2 is notorious for high winds, steep and icy slopes - and high fatality rates for climbers.

In winter months, scant snowfall means the summit approach can turn into bare ice.

At least 70 people had died by 2017 climbing the peak, many of them at the Bottleneck, where a wrong step can send a climber hurtling off the South Face, where bodies are unlikely to be recovered.

Pakistan is a hot destination for climbers. It rivals Nepal for the number of peaks over 7,000 metres (22,966 feet) and in all, it has five of the world’s 14 summits higher than 8,000 meters.

Last year, the Pakistan Army had rescued a Russian climber from Karakoram range peak in the northern part of the country.
