Prayer leader killed in firing incident

Police arrested a couple for their alleged involvement in smuggling and seized narcotics from their possession

SARGODHA: Two men, including a prayer leader, were killed in separate firing incidents in Miani and Jauhrabad police limits on Monday.

Police said Ghulam Haider, 71, the Imam of Masjid Vadhan village, and his son Saqlain were going to Jinnah Colony in a car. Four unknown gunmen, riding on two motorcycles, ambushed the vehicle and opened fire. As a result, Haider suffered bullet injuries and died on the spot.

In another incident, Muhammad Rizwan shot his elder brother Mujahid Ali dead over a property dispute in Chak 111/ML and managed to escape. Police registered separate cases and started an investigation.

Meanwhile, two men were killed in separate road accidents in Atta Shaheed police limits.

Police said that Muhammad Riaz, a resident of Chak No. 49/NB Sargodha, was riding a motorcycle on Lahore Road when a recklessly driven car hit him near Taj Hotel. Riaz suffered severe injuries and died instantly. However, the accused car driver managed to escape from the scene.

In another accident, Muhammad Akmal was travelling on his motorbike near 49 trail when a speeding rickshaw hit him and he died on the spot. The rickshaw driver managed to escape.

The bodies were handed over to the heirs after legal formalities. Police registered separate cases.

In another case, police arrested a man and his wife for their alleged involvement in smuggling drugs and recovered a large quantity of narcotics from their possession in Kot Momin police limits.

Police said a Kot Momin police team, headed by DSP Raja Fakhar Bashir, stopped a vehicle at Jan Muhammadwala check post near Kot Momin interchange and arrested a man identified as Azizur Rehman and his wife Saba Bibi. They recovered over 10 kilogrammes of heroin from the vehicle. Police took the car into custody and registered a case.
