Wajid Durrani appointed Sindh police chief

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani appoints Wajid Ali Durrani as Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh.

In a late night development, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani appointed Wajid Ali Durrani as Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh, transferring him from his current post as IGP Islamabad. The acting charge of Islamabad’s top cop was given to Deputy IGP (Operations) Islamabad Bani Amin.

Durrani’s appointment as IG Sindh was expected after former IGP Sindh Fayaz Leghari, was removed on the orders of the Supreme Court following the extrajudicial killing of a young man, Sarfaraz Shah, by Rangers personnel in Karachi.

Wajid Durrani has earlier served as Additional IGP Sindh before replacing Kaleem Iman as IGP Islamabad this January.

Last week, the Supreme Court ordered removal of both IGP Sindh and Director General Rangers Sindh from their respective positions during the hearing of a suo moto case on Shah’s killing.

The government, acting upon the Supreme Court directives, removed both the officers on Tuesday.

Bilal | 13 years ago | Reply Salman i know its quite an 'in' thing to criticize evey action of the government these days, but not everything the government does is wrong. Do you even know Wajid ? The guy received the Pakistan Police Medal and the Quaid-e-Azam Police Medal during 1980s by the Zia's regime. He's as much an insider as any one living in Karachi, he was brought up in sindh, knows sindhi, has ancestral land in interior sindh and has always served the province since joining Pakistan Police. And by the way what's our definition of an 'outsider'? I thought we're all insiders by the dint of being Pakistanis... Even the Chief Justice in one of his recent cases observed that Wajid was an honest officer and that he trusted his investigation of a case. So just let him be...
