The first environmentally-friendly Zigzag kiln has started functioning in Layyah, Express News has learnt. The kiln was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Babar Bashir at Chak no 163.

Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that zigzag kilns were of vital importance as these were environment friendly and saved extra amounts on fuel. “It cuts fuel costs by up to 30% and reduces pollution by 70%,” he added.

He directed officials of the environment department to create awareness among kiln owners about the efficacy of the zigzag technology. Bashir maintained the Punjab government was taking steps to promote a neat and clean environment. He appreciated the efforts of the environment department for encouraging the technology in Punjab.

Meanwhile, experts said that use of zigzag technology in construction and the operation of kilns can minimise the effects of burning coal on the environment and reduce fuel consumption up to 30%.

They highlighted the traditional design of brick kilns is not only energy intensive, but also increases various health hazards and environmental issues. They pointed out that with the help of modified design, up to 30% reduction in fuel would save millions of dollars spent on coal import, besides reduction in carbon emission up to 85%, thus controlling environmental degradation.

The experts revealed that the production of high quality bricks could be improved up to 95%

They said the Pakistan Engineering Council should help create awareness about this technology through trainings. The experts added links should be established between indigenous research and development organisations, while pursuing policy reforms in the sector to encourage and support the kiln owners as well as the society.
