PESHAWAR: The chief of the local peace committee in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bara tehsil was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Saturday.

Malik Mir Alam Afridi was fatally shot by two motorcycle riders near the Hayatabad Toll Plaza in Peshawar, said officials.

While the attackers managed to escape, Afridi was rushed to the Hayatabad Medical Complex where he was declared dead on arrival.

Afridi was a known symbol of resistance to militancy in the area of Bara tehsil.

This was the second attempt on his life, he previously survived a gun attack near Arbab Road in Peshawar in 2014.

Police officials confirmed that an FIR was registered against the attackers and investigators are working to gather evidence.

Journalist shot dead, another injured in Peshawar

Afridi's murder is the second target killing on Peshawar's Ring Road in recent days, following the December 3 attack on journalists Noorul Hasan and Sabir.
