PESHAWAR: In an unprecedented move, close circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at a government-run high school in Peshawar to keep a close look at activities of both students and teachers, and ensure quality education.

The Government Higher Secondary School No.1, which has become the first educational institution in the province for having the monitoring facility, used its annual funds of Rs500,000 for the installation of surveillance cameras in its 48 classrooms.

A control room has been set up at the principal's office such that the presence, and performance of teachers and students in the classrooms can be ensured.

The principal can not only monitor the classrooms’ activities through monitors installed at his office but also use a mobile phone application to do the same while being away from school.

Shamsuddin, the school’s IT teacher who also supervises the CCTV facility, said that the school has always strived to excel in terms of educational facilities and standard. “The school has the term ‘No.1’ in its name, and we make sure its name is reflected in the way we deliver,” he told Express.

The students, he said, secured top positions in board exams in the past “but these days we are unable to even being among the top 20 ranks”.

The real purpose of installation of the CCTV cameras is to bring back the school's lost glory, he added. “The state-of-the-art facility will not only ensure a check on students but on teachers as well, prompting them to be punctual in their classes.”
