LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been advised by his personal doctor to get more tests conducted to ascertain the root cause of his chest pain but his preliminary tests have turned out to be satisfactory, sources have revealed.

Sharif’s personal physician, Dr Adnan, was permitted by the Kot Lakhpat authorities to visit the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo after his party expressed concern over his deteriorating health condition.

Nawaz Sharif has been incarcerated since December 24, 2018, after an accountability court convicted him in a corruption reference filed in line with the apex court’s July 28, 2017 verdict.

During a roughly two-hour-long checkup, his doctor declared him healthy but suggested more tests to determine the cause of his chest pain. Jail doctor and superintendent were also present during the checkup.

Sources said Sharif’s blood pressure and sugar level were under control. They said his tests were expected to be conducted earlier next week. Jail doctors have already declared Nawaz Sharif healthy, said Punjab government spokesperson Dr Shehbaz Gill.

Earlier in the day, the PML-N workers protested against the government outside the jail for not allowing Nawaz Sharif’s personal doctor to hold his checkup. Senior party leader including Ahsan Iqbal and Pervaiz Malik also took part in the protest.

Later, Iqbal also held a meeting with jail authorities and said he was satisfied with the medical facilities being provided to Nawaz Sharif. He said the PML-N supporters got worried about Sharif’s health after his daughter Maryam Nawaz tweeted that Sharif is complaining about a pain in his arm.
