LAHORE: Jamat-e-Islami (JI)  leader Senator Sirajul Haq has said the incumbent government’s performance during the past five months has not gone beyond claims and promises.

Addressing party workers during their central meeting, he said only the name of the government has changed but its actions remain like those of its predecessor. The current government is like the previous government’s new edition, he said.

The senator said those who had ruled the country during the past 70 years had caused losses on all fronts and left it divided. He said every child of the nation was at the mercy of donors like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because of those people who kept changing political parties to remain in the assemblies. The people sitting at the helm of affairs aren’t new, he said.

Senator Haq said those benefitting from selective accountability cannot bring about any reform. He said nothing would improve without genuine accountability, which is why there should be no favouritism while taking action against corruption.

Sirajul Haq wants all corrupt people on ECL

Whoever has looted the national wealth, take loans from banks and not returned them, misused authority and acquired palatial properties in and outside the country should be tried in accountability courts and every single penny should be recovered from him, he said.

He said accountability is the whole country’s demand, not just JI’s. He said that not a single penny from the looted national wealth had returned to the treasury. The government can make whatever claims it wants, but the nation will only be satisfied when the money stashed overseas will be brought back and the country will not have to ask anyone for loan, he said.

The senator said the country cannot progress without real democracy but whenever elections take place in the country, objections are raised about them and majority of the people remain away from the process.

After the elections, five years pass amid such misgivings, due to which people have lost trust in the electoral process, he said.

He said only a government coming through transparent and fair elections  can put the country on the road to prosperity.
