Ex-minister says party ‘allowing’ PTI to collapse under own weight

LAHORE: The Pakistan People Party in a bid to exhibit its political strength, has once again reiterated it does not intend to topple the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government but it can do so if its leadership so desired.

The remarks were made by senior PPP leader during a press conference here on Wednesday to announce party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will visit the city on January 5.

Former information minister Qamar Zaman Kaira told reporters the party can take down the government if it so desired but it wants PTI to collapse under its own weight. “By letting this government function, we want to give them space to expose their incompetence”.



He said when all political parties were considering boycotting the assemblies, PPP decided to become a part of this system allowing Imran Khan to form his government.

Kaira also condemned the JIT report in the fake bank account cases and the media bashing that followed.

“The report presented a one-sided version and the PPP is yet to give its side of the story,” said the senior PPP leader, adding the reason PPP is brought under scrutiny is to shift focus of the nation from the government’s poor governance, deteriorating financial situation of the country, growing inflation and depreciation of the rupee against the dollar.

He also said the PPP leadership had always been against the concept of JIT right from the beginning, especially ones which have intelligence members in them.

“We wanted a judicial commission to probe Nawaz Sharif’s matter but at the last moment it was Imran Khan who decided to approach the court following the footsteps of Sheikh Rashid,” said Kaira.



He also termed forming a review committee by the federal cabinet for taking out the names from ECL a joke with the court while adding political interference in bureaucracy is at an all-time high in Punjab despite their tall claims.

“PTI itself is taking loans on high interest rate despite bashing previous governments for taking loans on similar terms,” said the PPP leader.

Meanwhile, another PPP stalwart Chaudary Manzoor said first Sindh was deprived of its electricity, then its share of water and now gas, adding the province has been given Rs94 billion less than what its share is in the divisible pool due to which many development projects have been stalled.

“PPP reserves its right to protest if it is pushed against the wall,” he said, adding PTI should realise the federal government stands on four pillars and if one pillar goes down, the entire structure collapses.
