Illegal sub-campuses: Judicial remand of five accused extended in Lahore

Court extends remand on NAB’s request till Jan 17

LAHORE: An accountability court on Wednesday extended judicial remand of former vice chancellor of Sargodha University Prof Muhammad Akram and four others in a case related to the establishment of two illegal sub-campuses of the varsity, till Jan 17.

Accountability Court Judge Syed Najamul Hassan passed the orders after National Accountability Bureau's officials pleaded with the court for extension in judicial remand.

Besides Prof Muhammad Akram, other suspects including Sargodha University's former registrar Brig (retd) Rao Jamil, Lahore sub-campus' former admin director Akram, Mandi Bahauddin sub-campus CEO Waris and his partner Naeem were also produced before the court.

Lahore sub-campus' former CEO Mian Javed Ahmad was also arrested in connection with the scam but he died in jail due to a heart attack.

The bureau arrested the accused of establishing illegal sub-campuses under public-private partnership policy and jeopardising future of thousands of students. The sub-campuses enrolled thousands of students, received hefty fees and jeopardised future of students due to illegal status of the sub-campuses.

The arrest was made by the NAB to complete its inquiry as per the directives were given by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar while hearing a suo motu case on a petition of the students of private campuses of the university at the Supreme Court's Lahore Registry.
