LAHORE: Renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel has been admitted to a private hospital in the Jauhar Town neighbourhood of Lahore after he complained of angina.

At the hospital, Dr Tahir Kamal, the elder brother of Maulana Jameel, performed angiography and diagnosed that one of the arteries was blocked, his spokesperson Muhammad Tahir Rahimi told The Express Tribune.

Subsequently, Dr Tahir performed angioplasty to remove the blockage and then placed a stent to restore blood flow in the artery, he added.

Maulana Jameel has been shifted to a room after successful procedures, according to his son Maulana Muhammad Yousaf Jameel. “His condition is stable now, but doctors have advised him to rest for 24 hours in the hospital,” he added.

Maulana Jameel, who has travelled extensively to preach Islam, returned to Pakistan from Canada last night. Family sources say Maulana Jameel had also suffered similar angina pain six years ago and a stent was placed in the blocked artery after angioplasty.

Maulana Jamil figured at No 40 on the 2019 list of the ‘World’s 500 Most Influential Muslims’, which describes him as a “prominent Deobandi scholar who is also one of the most popular preachers in Pakistan”.

“He belongs to the Tablighi Jamaat group and his lectures focus on the subject of self-purification, avoidance of violence, observance of Allah’s orders and pursuing the way of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),” according to the Maulana’s profile on ‘The Muslim 500’.
Maulana Jameel hails from Tulamba near Mian Channu in Punjab’s Khanewal district.

According to www.themuslim500.com, “After completing pre-medical studies, Maulana Jameel was admitted to the King Edward Medical College in Lahore. It was there — under the influence of members of the Tablighi Jamaat — that his focus changed to Islamic Education.

“His Islamic training is from Jamia Arabia, where he studied the Holy Qur’an, Hadith, Sufism, logic, and Islamic jurisprudence.

“Maulana Jameel's background in the sciences allows him to explain Islamic matters in a way that appeals to modern urban Muslims.

Additionally, his simple lifestyle and eloquence in Urdu, as well as his fluency in Arabic, catapulted his fame across the Muslim world.

Through his lectures, Maulana Jameel promotes inter-faith harmony, peace and tolerance. He has spoken against sectarian and ethnic violence in the country.
