Annual report reveals 10 per cent rise in Lahore Zoo revenue
DG says over 108 types of animals and birds are housed at the facility

At present, around 108 types of animals and birds, numbering 1,144, are part of the Lahore Zoo. This was stated in the Lahore Zoo annual performance report which was released on Monday. At least 774 new animals and birds were born throughout the year. In 2018, the birth rate was 36% more as compared to 2017, said Lahore Zoo Director Hassan Ali Sukhera, who released the annual report.

He said that 167 animals and birds died in 2018 and the death ratio has decreased to 40 per cent as compared to 2017. The report revealed that in 2018, Lahore Zoo earned Rs167 million which is 10% more than 2017. A total of 411,5272 people visited the zoo and the number of visitors increased by 20 per cent last year.
Sukhera said that six types of new animals and birds have been bought for Lahore Zoo, while elephants, hippopotamus, rhinos, Bengal tigers and chimpanzees could not be purchased due to some problems. The animals, including hog dear and Indian python, were
found in an injured condition from different areas, he said.
Wildlife dept to increase facilities at parks
The director added that these animals were now healthy. Sukhera said that a mobile application was being developed for information of Lahore Zoo. He added an education center would also be established to create awareness among children about animals and birds.
In 2018, five employees of Lahore Zoo retired, he said. An employees’ service structure would be completed and those who work on daily wages would be made permanent by 2019, he added. On Monday, the day last of 2018, Sohail Ashraf was appointed as director general of the Department of Wildlife Protection Punjab.
