QUETTA: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Balochistan on Monday released its annual progress report for 2018, including major investigations against key political figures and bureaucrats in the province.

The report states that the anti-corruption watchdog recovered Rs1 billion and arrested 25 people in corruption cases, filing 13 references in accountability courts during the year.

“In 2018, the NAB Balochistan has expedited action against corrupt elements in Balochistan to discourage the menace of corruption in the province, while three ex-chief ministers, two former speakers, more than 20 member of provincial assembly (MPAs) and bureaucrats were brought under investigation,” the NAB spokesman was quoted as saying in the report.

Moreover, around 1,100 complaints of corruption were received — out of which 100 inquiries and 25 investigations are under way.

“Former food minister Mir Izhar Kosa and secretary Noor Pirkani, Gwadar Industrial Estate Development Authority (GIEDA) MD Mehboob Dashti, Finance GM Waqas Ahmed and many influential personalities in government departments were booked in corruption scandals.”

Upon complaints regarding corruption in projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), NAB commenced investigations against officials suspected of embezzling more than Rs1 billion in the installation of desalination plants in Makran division.

“Many officers of the Gwadar Development Authority were apprehended while NAB launched an investigation over illicit land allotment in the port city,” the spokesman said.
