QUETTA: At least 11 prisons in Balochistan are filled beyond their capacity, causing various diseases among prisoners, Prisons Balochistan Inspector General Malik Shujjauddin Kasi said on Wednesday.

In a meeting with Help Balochistan President Dr Ameer Muhammad Jogezai, the IG said “at least 11 prisons in Balochistan including Quetta Central Jail has been filled with prisoners beyond their capacity, causing spread of various diseases.”

Kasi called for immediate attention over plight of prisoners in Balochistan. He urged social organisations and philanthropists to lend a helping hand in imparting healthcare to prisoners.

The IG said non-government organisations should come forward in taking initiatives for diagnosing diseases among prisoners and providing them better healthcare.

The president pledged full support in providing healthcare services to all prisoners of Balochistan. Moreover, he said assistance from legal forum of Balochistan would be obtained to release women and children from prisons.
