Cyclone not moving towards Pakistan: Met Office

The cyclone is currently at a distance of 650 kilometres off the coast of Karachi.

KARACHI: Pakistan Meteorological Office on Friday said that a cyclone will not hit the coastal areas of Pakistan as had been expected earlier.

Chief Meteorologist, Naeem Shah said that low temperature had diverted the cyclone from the coastal areas of Pakistan and that it was moving to the north-east instead.

The cyclone is currently at a distance of 650 kilometres off the coast of Karachi.

The coastal areas of Badin, Thatta, Makran, Karachi and Gwadar are expected to receive rain and winds early next week.

The Met office has advised fishermen against going into deep waters.

Earlier, it had been reported that a strong weather system in the northwest part of Arabian Sea was gaining intensity and had nearly converted into a tropical cyclone.

miks | 13 years ago | Reply Dont know why we bother to have a MET dept. BBC Weather always seems to be more accurate. Plus the head of the dept looks like a nutter - long beard and all.

S Khan | 13 years ago | Reply From day one BBC weather report along with Indian Met Dept report was 180 degrees opposite to Pak Met office they all said this drepression is going to fade aways at its present location same happened. even the fisherman interviewed on various TV channels were of same view. One can judge the efficency of Pak Met office the long term forecast of Monsoon 2011 available on Indian Met office web site along with B desh met office web site since last one month , Pak met office still show Winter 2011 forecast that is totally out of place.

Jawed Saleem | 13 years ago | Reply Met Office was VERY CORRECT by sending out early ALERTS. Its always advisable to "ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION" while dealing with storms and a city of 11+ million. The city CANNOT withstand a Category-1 Cyclone hit, the devastation will be of biblical proportions ! "Fore Warned - Fore Armed" is right & proper policy(adopted by met off). Totally agree with other participants the science of predicting storm formation and future developments is COMPLEX !

Asif Gul | 13 years ago | Reply Salam ,Its very unfortunate that a general trend prevails throughout the nation that every one has to comment on every issue either he has or not any background knowledge. , meteorology is a highly scientific discipline lots of factors are involved in any large scale weather scenario development & for weather forecast what ever data Pakistan met office needs is available.

Karamullah | 13 years ago | Reply @sam: That's an unfair comment. As a former student of meteorology I can tell you that the warning issued by the met dept was not without merit. Although it was a overly-cautious warning, bear in mind that predicting the weather is like predicting the behavior of women. Its not an exact science, there are many variables, and the eye of the storm can be tricky to look into. The best approach is to pray for the best and prepare for the worst. Because lets face it, no one wants to be stuck in a storm without an umbrella.

sam | 13 years ago | Reply our MET dept is an absolute embarrassment.. i visited multiple intenational weather forecasting website NONE of which forecasted rain for karachi let alone a cyclone...
