KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has started constructing a graveyard in Surjani Town and its first phase will be completed by June 2019.

According to KMC officials, 10 acres of land has been reserved in Surjani Town sector 16 for this purpose. The graveyard will be developed in four phases. The boundary has been constructed and pathways will also be made. A separate area will be reserved for the burial of minors. A drain will also be constructed for rainwater as there are hills in the surroundings of the graveyard. Sources said that the graveyard director and department of engineering will supervise the work.

It will be open for burial soon after the completion of its first phase in June 2019.

For the last two years, residents of Karachi have been facing difficulties as a ban had been placed for burial in old graveyards of the city. Due to the ban, burial was being carried out through alleged bribery.  Sources said that when Karachi Mayor imposed a ban on burial, he promised to develop a new graveyard. However, the promises were not fulfilled. After two years, the work has started on a new graveyard that will take more than a year to complete.
