Bill Gates lauds PM's efforts in polio eradication

The two also discussed strengthening the IT sector in the country

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Co-chairman of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates, in a telephonic conversation on Wednesday, discussed Pakistan’s efforts in polio eradication.

Gates appreciated the premier for his efforts in polio eradication, Radio Pakistan reported.

The two also discussed strengthening the Information Technology sector in the country. The American tech expert reassured Imran of continued cooperation in various fields. In addition, the premier expressed gratitude towards Gates for his cooperation in the social sector.

Gates, on the occasion, also felicitated PM Imran on assuming office.

Babr bin Ata, the premier's focal person on polio eradication, also assisted the prime minister during the phone call.

Earlier this year, billionaire Gates announced aid for polio eradication and health services in Pakistan. He made this offer during a meeting with a minister in Abu Dhabi, where the two discussed prospects of a partnership in the health sector between the foundation and the Government of Pakistan.

In May, Microsoft Corporation co-founder Gates acknowledged Pakistan’s use of innovative systems for immunisation coverage, terming it an example for the rest of the world to emulate.

In 2018, a total of three new polio cases surfaced in Pakistan – all of which were reported from Balochistan’s Duki area. Quetta, Qila Abdullah and Pishin have been declared high-risk areas where polio virus is believed to be active.

Pakistan is one of the few countries among Afghanistan and Nigeria where polio virus still exists.
