KMC demolishes 70 shops at Burnes Road

Will move to Lee Market, Khoury Garden and Garden next

KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation continued its anti-encroachment operation at Burnes Road on Sunday, demolishing more than 70 shops that were constructed on footpaths and roads.

Illegal constructions in front of residential buildings were also demolished. The inner streets of Burnes Road which were originally 50 to 60 feet wide had been limited to 15 to 20ft due to encroachments. The operation in Burnes Road and its surrounding areas will continue till complete cleanliness is restored and constructions on footpaths, roads and streets are cleared. Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saifur Rehman is supervising the campaign and visited the area for inspection. He gave directions to further speed up the operation.

Rehman said that the next operation will be carried out in Lee Market, Khoury Garden and Garden and advised occupants of these areas to voluntarily vacate the encroached spaces.

He said that Burnes Road is an old area of the city which historic buildings and national heritage. "It should be very clean and beautiful. We are trying to restore it to its original condition," he said.
