KARACHI: Crumbling infrastructure is a grave threat to one of the biggest industrial estates of Pakistan - the Sindh Industrial and Trading Estate (SITE) Karachi - and if corrective steps are not taken immediately, a mass shifting of industries will be on the cards, which will be a blow to the national economy, said SITE Association of Industry President Saleem Parekh. “The government of Sindh and SITE Limited are playing the role of a silent spectator to the systematic destruction of SITE Karachi, which is a national tragedy and a grave conspiracy against the economy of Pakistan,” he said while addressing a meeting with the media. He said SITE Karachi is spread over 4,840 acres and it houses 3,600 factories. He regretted that due to poor civic infrastructure, many industries are being shifted to other industrial areas of the country and abroad, which is a serious issue and to be tackled on a war footing. Parekh said the provincial government of Sindh is not serious to resolve the issues, while political interference and huge over-staffing in SITE Limited are hurting the industrial estate.
