Indian cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu came down hard at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, saying that the PM is envious because he was not invited to his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan’s oath-taking ceremony.

“I will not prove my patriotism to people whose name came up in Godhra riots case,” Sidhu was quoted by Times Now as saying.

The statement comes after BJP leader Manoj Tiwari had asked the Congress party to clarify its stand on controversial statements made recently by party leaders Sidhu and Raj Babbar.

The former cricketer courted controversy by embracing Pakistan’s army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on his visit for Prime Minister Imran Khan’s oath-taking as the country’s premier.

Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has called Sidhu a hypocrite and called for his call records to be reviewed to see whether “he is in constant touch with Pakistanis”.

Last month, Sidhu once again stirred more controversy by saying that going to Pakistan was better than South India owing to the cultural similarities.

“If I go to Tamil Nadu, I don’t understand the language. Not that I don’t like the food, but I can’t take it for long. That culture is totally different,” Sidhu said while speaking at a literary festival in Kasol.

“But if I travel to Pakistan there is no difficulty. The language is the same and everything there is just amazing,” he added.
