PESHAWAR: Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday raided and sealed an illegal kidney transplant facility.

A joint operation by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the provincial Health Care Commission raided the facility in the Dabgari Gardens area. The team was acting under directives from the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to act against illegal organ transplant facilities in the province.

At least 11 operation theatres in the facility were sealed by the authorities and three others were served notices.

Joint operations have been launched in Mardan, Dera Ismail Khan and Hazara divisions as well, FIA added.

The World Health Organisation defines illegal organ trade as removal of an organ from the body for the purpose of commercial transaction. “Payment for organs is likely to take unfair advantage of the poorest and most vulnerable groups, undermines altruistic donation and leads to profiteering and human trafficking.”
