ISLAMABAD:

An inquiry into the deaths of two women has revealed that they died due to an infection after a medical procedure. The report said that the deaths were not caused by the administration of a drug, as had been previously alleged.

The report said that the two pregnant patients, Fauzia (25) and Safia (27), contracted an infection while being treated. The infection got worse and ultimately resulted in their death.

Pakistan Institute of medical Sciences (Pims) had constituted an inquiry committee to investigate matter of alleged negligence in the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) centre.

The committee submitted its report to Pims Executive Director (ED) Mehmood Jamal on June 6, sources in the hospital said.

Sources said there could be many reasons behind the cause of infection. For instance, they could have been infected while they were being transferred from one room to another.

It is also possible that they could have been carrying the infection before being admitted, a doctor said.

A senior doctor said on condition of anonymity that the patient might be a carrier of the E coli germ which reacts when Flagyl, an antibiotic, is injected. The Express Tribune tried to contact Dr Jehanzaib Aurakzai, joint ED of Pims, but he was not immediately available for comment.

Fauzia (25) and Safia (27) were admitted to the hospital a few days back.

Initially the doctors were of the view that the antibiotic that had been injected during surgery had caused a severe reaction.

The patients were operated upon again, but did not survive the surgery.

Some of the other patients, who were administered the same drug, have also developed complications, hospital sources said.

Following these incidents, Maternal and Child Health centre’s administration wrote to Pims executive director who ordered an inquiry into the matter.
