LAHORE: A report, submitted to the Punjab governor, tinkered with  the findings of the chief security officer (CSO) of the Punjab University pertaining to the involvement of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) in the incident of torture of a student in the varsity.

The report submitted by the CSO before the university administration clearly stated, “two to three students having an association with IJT came and tried to ask the reason for the fight from Awais and security guard Javaid. In return, it resulted into a brawl between the students and Awais.”

However, the report forwarded to the governor was amended as, “two to three students reportedly having an association with IJT”. The rest of the content of the two reports, copies of which available with The Express Tribune, is the same.

The CSO’s report submitted to the university administration stated that on October 24 at 1600 hours one girl student of Gender Studies along with a man named Awais, working for Koh-e-Noor television channel, were enjoying snacks in the history department of the varsity when security guard of the department Javaid asked them rudely to prove their identity. Awais got annoyed on this and exchanged harsh words with the security guard which later turned into a brawl. The CSO’s report mentioned Awais as the husband of the girl student.

The second paragraph of the report stated that later on two to three students, having an association with IJT, came close and tried to ask the reason of the fight from Awais and security guard Javaid. In return, it resulted into a fight between the students and Awais. So in order to support the security guard, they also started beating Awais. The case was reported to the authority concerned instantly. The inquiry was conducted in the presence of the girl student and Awais along with security guard. A requisite punishment has been given to the security guard and notices were being issued to the students involved in the brawl.

The girl and her husband were satisfied with the steps taken by the university administration, the CSO added in the report. However, the focal person of IJT, Raja Umair, said the student organisation has nothing to do with the incident. Activists of IJT came forward to resolve the issue when it had occurred. “Both the students nominated for further investigations do not have any link with IJT,” he remarked.
