Victim first escapes stampeding cows twice but goes back in to save his dog

A man was trampled to death by a herd of cows in a field in Sussex county of the United Kingdom, Mail Online reported on Thursday.

The victim, John McNamara, who was 67 years old, was killed in a field in Forest Row on Monday.

He had first escaped the stampeding cows with two of his canines, however, he had gone back into the field to save his third dog but was trampled to death.

A Sussex police spokesperson said, "The bodies of a man and a dog were found in a field on farmland in Priory Road, Forest Row, at 1:45pm on October 8."

She added that deaths of the 67-year-old and his dog are not being treated as suspicious. However, circumstances under which the incident took place are being probed.

The deaths come two months after 64-year-old Stephen Sandy was trampled to death by his cattle just 15 minutes drive away in Groombridge.

Figures reveal that nearly 80 people have died in accidents involving cattle since 2000.

The lion's share of victims are farm workers with a quarter being unsuspecting members of the public out walking on footpaths.

The number of attacks by cattle, which can cause injuries as serious as punctured lungs and broken bones, also significantly go unreported due to lack of awareness around the need to highlight the dangers of being around large livestock.
