Safe blood programme enters phase II

Will cover 35 per cent transfusion needs across the county

ISLAMABAD: The second phase of safe blood transfusion programme will cover 35 per cent transfusion needs across the county, officials told Federal Minister for National Health Services Aamer Mahmood Kiani. Islamabad Blood Transfusion Authority (IBTA) Chairman Prof Hasan Abbas Zaheer briefed the minister on the implementation of the German government funded Safe Blood Transfusion Programme (SBTP) and the regulation of the blood transfusion sector. Kiani underscored the significance of the preventive aspect in healthcare especially blood transfusion. He appreciated the support provided by the German government through KFW Development Bank to create the new blood transfusion system in Pakistan. Prof Zaheer said there is 100% automated screening of all blood samples for hepatitis B, C and HIV.
