LAHORE: An accountability court, on Tuesday, granted the 10-day physical remand of the former vice-chancellor of Sargodha University Dr Akram Chaudhry and the varsity’s former registrar Brigadier (retd) Rao Jamil Asghar to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The accused are facing charges of establishing illegal sub-campuses, under a public-private partnership policy. Judge Syed Najamul Hasan Bukhari, while hearing the case, also remanded the Lahore sub-campus CEO Mian Javed, Director Administration Muhammad Akram, Mandi Bahauddin sub-campus CEO Waris Nadeem and his partner Naeem Mukhtar into the NAB custody.
The NAB prosecutor said Dr Akram, as vice chancellor of Sargodha University, allegedly received millions in bribes, misused his powers, rejected recommendations of the university affiliation committee and observations of the Higher Education Department and the Planning and Development Department while establishing illegal sub-campuses.
The bureau’s prosecutor requested the court to grant a 15-day physical remand of the six accused who were taken into custody by NAB a day earlier.
However, the court granted a 10-day physical remand. The court ordered that all the six be produced before the court again on October 18.
