Set up committee for encouraging trade, addressing imbalance.

It was stated by Mauritian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade Seetanah Lutchmeenaraidoo during a meeting with newly appointed Pakistan High Commissioner to Mauritius Dr Syed Rizwan Ahmed at Port Louis.
Mauritius and Pakistan expressed the willingness to reinforce bilateral cooperation in several sectors. In addition to political and economic ties, the two countries wished to bring their people closer through cultural, culinary and sporting events, All Africa reported on Wednesday.
Regarding trade, a working committee has been set up to review barriers with a view to coming up with proposals to stimulate trade activities between the two countries as well as to address any existing imbalance.
The minister emphasised the importance of giving a new impetus to trade in services and cooperation in the tourism sector.
“Mauritius aspires to play a strategic role between Asia and Africa,” he said.

“To that end, it can offer several opportunities to Pakistani enterprises which have started or are considering beginning activities in the continent.”
Discussions also focused on how the financial centre of Mauritius could be used by Pakistan as a platform for investment in the African continent.
Other issues raised were related to cooperation in fields such as healthcare and higher education.
Under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme, Mauritius has got 16 study scholarships in the fields of medicine and engineering.
Regarding people-to-people contacts, both sides agreed to build on the already solid friendly relations.
