A report by the education department shows that 348 lavatories are needed in 318 government schools across the district while 148 school buildings are dilapidated.

The report shows that 318 schools across the district do not lavatories while drinking water at 200 schools in Shujabad, Jalalpur and Multan have tested positive for high levels of arsenic and other contaminants. Further, 11 schools do not have any facilities to provide students and teachers with drinking water.

Around 605 additional classrooms are required in 233 schools across the district while five schools require electricity, the report highlighted.

When questioned, District Education Authority CEO Muhammad Mukhtiar said that the lack facilities are due to the large number of students that have been enrolled at schools. He agreed that for 40 children, a lavatory is a necessity.

However, he maintained that no school building in Multan division is dilapidated. Mukhtiar said that arsenic can also be found in the district’s supply of drinking water. He added that he has voiced his concerns at a departmental meeting on September 5 where he suggested that the water supply at all schools be tested for contaminants.
