Raja Jalal Hussain Maqpoon was appointed governor Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday, reported Radio Pakistan.

Maqpoon is the Gilgit-Baltistan chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and will assume the new role after taking oath, administered by the chief judge of the Supreme Appellate Court, later this week.

The senior PTI leader from G-B will become the sixth governor of the northern administrative territory.

The post was vacated after Mir Ghazanfar Ali Khan resigned as G-B governor earlier in September, following a controversy triggered by an alleged leaked video.

Khan’s family sources had also confirmed the resignation, claiming he resigned due to change of government at the Centre.

“He didn’t think it was appropriate for him to cling on to the post as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had formed government at the centre and it was their prerogative to appoint a fresh governor in the state,” said a family member.
