Sania Mirza, who will soon be embracing motherhood for the first time, has always fought for women empowerment. However, she feels that a few people voicing their concern on the subject won't foster change unless women feel empowered from within, reported Hindustan Times.

The tennis star believes the birth of a boy or girl should be celebrated in the same way.

“It is very difficult to get rid of something that has been a part of people’s mindset from probably the very beginning. Equality, for me, is that as woman, you have to believe that you are no less than anyone," Sania said.

"There are women in this world who don’t believe that they are equal to men. There are even many who believe that they deserve to get beaten up by their husbands. And they probably don’t say anything because they don’t have the courage to fight back,” she stated, adding that the feeling of equality and freedom for women must come to them naturally.

“If women believe that they are equal, that will only make for a better world," revealed the 31-year-old sportswoman.

“Being equal does not mean doing the same things like a man. This is not a competition and such things do not determine if men are better than women or otherwise. It’s about having equal opportunities and respect in life."

Sania continued, “I have always been for equality. This concern is not confined to one country, state or race. The fact that even today, players like Serena Williams are having to justify equal pay, shows that we don’t live in an equal world. I would love to see people celebrate in the same way when a girl is born, much like when a boy is born. That’s how we become an equal world."

Veer | 6 years ago | Reply @Stevenson - Pakistan is currently ranked the second worst country in the world for women after war torn Syria as per Amnesty International. Yes a few North Indian states have issues like foeticide but by & large the life of an Indian female is much better than the life of a Pakistani female. Indian women have much more opportunities & freedom compared to women in Pakistan & Sania Mirza herself is a living proof of that.
stevenson | 6 years ago | Reply The birth of a baby girl or any child is celebrated in Pakistan even though many rural families have a preference for boys. This is a far cry from India where people abort female fetuses on a mass scale. Not only is this practice not done in Pakistan but it is illegal. Sania Mirza should be speaking to her own countrymen in India to change this way. Hopefully she will learn more about this from her Pakistani husband. We celebrate the arrival of girls and boys both in Pakistan.
