Mend your attitude : ‘Traffic wardens need better training’

Motorists claim officials need to learn how to interact with people better

LAHORE: Motorists and motorcyclists in the provincial capital have stressed on the need to improve the training of traffic wardens.

Citizens believe officials need to learn how to deal with people and polish their skills so that they are able to manage traffic effectively.

The force was established with an aim to eliminate corruption from within the traffic police and to provide relief to commuters by regulating the flow of traffic effectively.

However, the ground reality shows that wardens require more training as their lack of interest, their absenteeism and short temper causes people many difficulties on the roads.

Anwar Elahi, a motorist, said that the wardens deputed at important thoroughfares across the city are usually spotted in threes, gossiping under awnings in the middle of the roads.

If a motorist has an argument with a traffic warden, the latter immediately calls in reinforcements to deal with the situation, he claimed.

In addition to this, many citizens maintained that main thoroughfares such as Jail Road, Mall Road, Ferozpur Road and Canal Road are always congested. This has become a nuisance for many as several offices are located along these routes.

Illegal parking spots, encroachments and construction work, compounded by absentee traffic wardens, has only contributed to the mess, citizens added.

They urged concerned authorities to devise an elaborate plan to tackle the congestion and to take notice of officials’ behaviour.
