Controversial umpire Rauf meets Arthur, Malik at GSL

The 62-year-old retired from umpiring after facing five-year ban for match-fixing and misconduct in IPL in 2013

LAHORE: Former Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf met with head coach Mickey Arthur and veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik during the ongoing team’s training camp for the upcoming Asia Cup at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Tuesday.

Rauf disappeared from the scene after being banned by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for five years for his alleged involvement in the match-fixing and misconduct during the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2013.

Following that development, Rauf was forced into retirement after being sidelined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) as well.

Rauf’s arrival at the team’s training camp will raise a few eyebrows as per the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s anti-corruption law, the officials involved in match-fixing cannot be involved in any cricketing activities.

When asked about the issue, Rauf said the anti-corruption laws of the governing body are only applicable on officials who are banned by the ICC, whereas he was banned by the BCCI.

He also said that he did not leave umpiring because of IPL scandal as he informed ICC prior to that incident that he will not officiate in any matches after 2013.
