Higher learning: SMIU celebrates 134 years of commitment to education

The university is providing affordable quality education to the masses, says VC

KARACHI: Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) celebrated its 134th foundation day with great fervor and enthusiasm on Saturday. SMIU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali Sheikh, along with international ambassadors and government officials attended the event held inside Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Auditorium.

In his address, VC Dr Muhammad Ali Sheikh said that after the invasion of Sindh by the British government in 1843, the local Muslims were disheartened because despite being a religious majority, they were not being granted their rightful status in various life faculties. Thus came about the foundation of Sindh Madressatul Islam University in 1885.

Dr Shaikh informed the audience that Hassan Ali Effendi, along with Justice Amir Ali first founded the Sindh Madressatul Islam School in Sindh which was later to become the nurturing ground for many renowned personalities across the country. SMIS aimed to impart the latest technological education to the poor. Sindh Madressatul Islam University continues the tradition to date by nurturing underprivileged students of the country by imparting state-of-the-art education.

He added that there are 200 government and private universities altogether, among which the government owned are in abysmal condition while the private ones are too expensive. Hence, SMIU is unique as it offers cutting edge education for a modest fee with a helping environment.

The students presented a song on the varsity’s 134th foundation day which was jointly attended by faculty members and guests. Johnson Green of the Public Affairs department and Stephen William of the Cultural Affairs department of the US Consulate also participated in the event, while Turkish Consul General Aichai Tolga, and vice chancellors of other universities were also present.
