Journalist abducted; to be set free within ‘24 hours’

Unidentified phone call assures family of Syed Saleem Shehzad that he would return in the next 24 hours.

The family of Syed Saleem Shehzad, a Pakistani journalist who went missing Sunday evening, has been assured through an unidentified phone call that he would return in the next 24 hours.


The correspondent for Asia Times Online, Shehzad, was abducted around 6:00 pm on Sunday while he was on his way to participate in a TV talk show. An FIR has also been lodged following the incident.

Days before his disappearance, Shehzad’s news article was published in the Asia Times Online on May 27 regarding the alleged links between navy officials and the al Qaeda.

The article published after the attack on PNS Mehran reads: “Al Qaeda carried out the brazen attack on PNS Mehran naval air station in Karachi on May 22 after talks failed between the navy and al Qaeda over the release of naval officials arrested on suspicion of al Qaeda links, an Asia Times Online investigation reveals.”

A married man with three children, Shehzad hailed from Karachi but had settled in Islamabad.

After the alleged abduction, he did contact his family but had no clue of his whereabouts.
