KARACHI:

Iran and Afghanistan have confirmed their participation in the International Beach Kabaddi Championship that begins from June 13 in Islamabad.

The eight teams featuring in the tournament includes sports departments of Wapda, Pakistan Police, Pakistan Railways, Higher Education Commission and four provincial squads as well.

“It’s very encouraging for us that Afghanistan and Iran have agreed to participate in the tournament,” Pakistan Kabaddi Federation (PKF) Secretary Muhammad Sarwar told The Express Tribune. “Our youngsters will get a chance to improve their game by taking on international players.”

Iran’s coach Asadollah Kabir, who will accompany the squad of six, has his eyes fixed on the title given how the sport’s popularity has increased in Iran during the last decade.

“The cultural affiliation plays a major role because kabaddi has the same appeal as traditional freestyle wrestling in Iran,” said Kabir. “It is a very challenging sport and after our success in the 2007 World Cup, the game gained popularity.”
