Presidential polls: ECP sets noon deadline to submit nomination papers

Candidates must file extract of electoral rolls duly signed by district election commissioner

ISLAMABAD: Candidates for the presidential election can file their nomination papers by 12 noon on August 27.

According to the election schedule issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), prospective candidates should also file an extract of electoral rolls duly signed by the district election commissioner, by the end of the deadline.

Chief justices of all high courts are serving as presiding officers for the election of the president of the federation.

The National Assembly hall will serve as the polling station for MNAs and Senators while members of provincial assemblies would cast their votes in their respective assemblies whose special sessions would be summoned by their speakers.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted by the Chief Election Commissioner on August 29.

According to Rule 3 of the Presidential Election Rules of 1988, all nomination papers should be accompanied by attested copies of identity cards of proposers and the seconders issued by the Senate, National Assembly or, as the case may be, provincial assembly secretariats.

ECP asked the proposers and seconders of the candidates to bring their original identity cards at the time of scrutiny.

Only members of parliament and provincial assemblies could act as proposers and seconders for candidates for the office of the President, who should not be less than 45 years of age and should fulfill qualifications as laid down in Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

Candidates could withdraw their nomination papers by August 30, before the list of final contestants is sent for printing of ballot papers.
Implementation of by-polls schedule starts today: Returning officers appointed to supervise by-elections in 37 constituencies on October 14, would start implementing the ECP schedule from Monday (today).
By-polls will be held on 11 National Assembly, nine K-P Assembly, 13 Punjab Assembly, two Sindh Assembly and two Balochistan Assembly seats.

Prospective candidates could submit nomination papers between August 28 and 30, and scrutiny of nomination papers would be conducted from September 4.

September 8 has been fixed as the last date for filing appeals against returning officers’ decisions regarding accepting or rejecting nomination papers.

Appellate tribunals would conclude appeals by September 13.
September 15 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidatures and election symbols would be allotted on September 16. Polling would be held on October 14.
