Malik announces amnesty for young Taliban

Interior minister urges Taliban to stop terrorist activities and to help govt in strengthening the country.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik announced amnesty for young Taliban who renounce violence and urged them to give up suicide bombing and other terrorist activities and help the government strengthen the country.

Addressing a Pakistan Peoples Party Youth Convention in Islamabad, the interior minister asked the participants if it was right to pray for the terrorists who have destroyed the national assets and slammed those who led funeral prayers for the al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden who was killed in a US raid in Abbottabad.

Malik also said he had prepared a summary regarding the provision of civil defence training to 25,000 youth on the President's orders.

Federal Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan, Jehangir Badar, Federal Minister Maula Bukhsh Chandio, Sharmila Farooqi, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich and other PPP leaders also addressed the convention.

The participants of the meeting also passed a resolution reposing confidence in the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari.

abdul moiz | 13 years ago | Reply no amnesty should be announced for the religious extremists,otherwise they'll get a chance to recuperate & then they will spread their cavemen mentality to our cities also.we can't give them breathing space otherwise we'll have public whipping of girls in our cities also,we'll have beheadings of what these mazhabi fanatics call 'blasphemy',we'll have public stoning to death of women .

Mirza | 13 years ago | Reply Even though I do not like any religious fanstics but there are millions of young men and women coming out of madarsas. You cannot kill them all, can you? A person is innocent till proven guilty. Most of these stupid nive youngsters did not committ any cime as yet. There is no easy solution or please correct me? You have to start from the hardened criminals which have committed real crimes. Then you go from there. You have to seprate men from boys and divide them. Get the inside info and change their lives. You you rehabilitate these youngsters, they would learn who was using them as fuel. Show them the movies and what happens to the bombers? I understand the anger of some people but these are innocent vicitms of mullahs and what general Zia had started. Not everything coming out of Malik's mouth is wrong. In fact it is the US plicy to divide these Jehadis. There is a news that Mullah Brother who was arrested and released last year had guided US to OBL's compound.

muhammad jehanzeb | 13 years ago | Reply why is he letting these islamic fundamentalists go? their mentality won't change.They'll still be the misogynistic,homophobic,intolerant bigots they were before the amnesty.We all saw this in the lal masjid episode when the religious fanatics inside were given an oppurtunity to escape as announcements were made on loudspeakers for them to get out & hundreds of the religious fanatics did get out but only to save thier lives,not becuase their sick & twitsted mindset had changed. The same is the case here with these religious fanatics,they have to be fought & eliminated,not given amnesties to escape & spread their religious fanaticisim in our society.

Chebbo | 13 years ago | Reply This man is far more supid than he appears to be. He is completly nonsense as he doesn't know what he talks about, neither the occasion, nor even the circumstances. His first priority is to highlight and grace all his party actions. Besides, his statements are apolitical in the sense that they reflect the state's vulnerability to such suicide bombers. Does he think he can domesticate the barbarian lot through his misplaced speechesnd amnesty calls? Useless! These talibans should be dealt with iron hands. Mr Malik, mobilise your resources and eradicate them with determination, with courage and with force. That's the right message to them. In fact, Mr Rehman Malik and Babar Awan are two stupid-minister-advisers who never spare any mishap to add fuel to the existing crisis.
