According to a health update released by the hospital, the former premier has been placed on life support. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders visited AIIMS in New Delhi on Thursday after Vajpayee health deteriorated earlier.

Doctors treating the veteran BJP leader remain tight-lipped about his condition. Hospital sources, however, said his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours.

“Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last nine weeks at AIIMS. His condition is critical and he is on life support,” a statement said.

Narendra Modi also visited AIIMS on Wednesday evening. Union Ministers Harsh Vardhan, Piyush Goyal and Smriti Irani also enquired after the former India prime minister.

Vajpayee's health took a turn for the worse after he suffered a stroke in 2009. The former Indian prime minister is diabetic, with one functional kidney. He developed dementia after the stroke. Vajpayee was admitted to AIIMS on June 11 following a kidney tract infection, chest congestion, urinary tract infection and low urine output.

He was placed on slow dialysis in June to help his kidneys heal. Vajpayee has been in the intensive care unit of the cardiothoracic and neuroscience tower at AIIMS since then.
