Of mixed hopes

The hope to carve a future that is different from the past 71 years is a beacon of a more inclusive, embracing nation

Editorial August 14, 2018

Name it the call of destiny or timings of circumstances that this time around, the month of August has brought more than one reason of jubilation for the country. As the nation prepares to celebrate the 71st year of its Independence, the day prior has brought a renewed sense of hope and faith in those who will have the reins of power. The hope to carve a future that is different from the past 71 years is a beacon of a more inclusive and embracing Pakistan.

Yet the very hope is tainted by the thought of the times that have changed for the worse, as the country faces dangers, threats and challenges that have grown manifolds and have immensely evolved in nature. Perhaps, numerous interesting instances await the newly embarked parliamentary tenure as political leaders of major parties took oath yesterday in the National Assembly. Nevertheless, of prime importance to these opposing parties must be the resolve to seek solution to domestic and global challenges.

With many new faces entering parliament, including Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, along with the old guards, it is hoped that the passion of the former and the political acumen of the latter would do the trick for the country. As the parties will carry on, with their business as usual, of playing friendly and non-friendly roles, while staying at loggerheads on innumerable issues, ideological differences must not take precedence over the national interest.

As after a ‘number game’ that spanned over weeks with the vying parties making claims to victory, the legislative houses have now welcomed their incumbents, albeit in varying numerical proportions. With the domestic political scenario becoming clearer, here are the hopes of better days ahead for the nation that has stood the test of time overcoming many challenges arising from both internal and the external factors.
