China’s TV brand sets up assembly plant in Karachi

Joint venture with local company has invested $1.5m with plans to further inject $1.3m

KARACHI: China’s TV brand Hisense, in collaboration with a Pakistani company, has set up an Ultra LED assembly plant in Karachi with plans to establish a local production laboratory in the future for Ultra LED panels.

Hisense, a state-owned enterprise headquartered in Qingdao, Shandong province, launched the Ultra LED and laser televisions in joint venture with Tri-Angels Electronics. The joint venture invested $1.5 million to set up the assembly plant in July. “We are also going to establish a clean laboratory for Ultra LED panels with additional $1.3 million by January 2019,” said Tri-Angels Electronics Chief Executive Officer Imran Ghani.



Every year, 1.4 million TV sets are imported into Pakistan, of which 60% come from China and 40% from Korea.

After this assembly plant and the panel laboratory, 70% to 75% LED sets will be produced or assembled in Pakistan, said the CEO while talking on the sidelines of the launch on Wednesday. The new plant, set up with the help of 39-year-old Hisense, which has also acquired renowned Toshiba, can produce 500 units every day. It employs 100 people and the number will double when the laboratory starts functioning.

Normal LED screens are of 1,080 pixels whereas the company has introduced Ultra LED which is of 4,000 pixels, said Tri-Angels Marketing Director Junaid Hidayat.
