WAPDA chief briefs bench on drafted legal framework, ToRs of the committee

ISLAMABAD: The country's top court has expressed satisfaction over the headway so far made by the Implementation Committee of Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams (ICDBMD).

A four-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Saqib Nisar said on Tuesday that the apex court would provide full support in the implementation of the two projects.

He added that the timely completion of the projects is imperative and the nation should join hands in this regard.

The top court, Justice Nisar said, is  fully committed to ensure that funds are spent solely for the construction of the dams.

Meanwhile, ICDBMD and Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) chairman Muzammil Hussain briefed the bench about measures initiated to ensure the early commencement of construction work on the dams.

In a detailed presentation about the committee's proceedings, the Wapda chief apprised the bench that legal framework and terms of references (ToRs) of the committee had been drafted.

Hussain added that besides the formation of seven sub-committees to identify impediments which might hinder the projects and the ways and means to remove those hurdles effectively.

The bench was briefed that the committee had succeeded in identifying the issues relating to land acquisition, project financing, procurement, security and coordination.

The bench was further informed about the timelines to accomplish the tasks leading towards early commencement of dam building.
